Some stories are worth waiting to tell.

This party has been quietly waiting in my archives for three years, and somehow it feels even more magical today. With all the excitement surrounding the 25th anniversary of Harry Potter this year, it feels like the right time to give this magical day the spotlight it deserves.

For my daughter's 10th birthday, I imagined Hogwarts through a softer lens—blush pinks, gilded details, floating candles, and just enough enchantment to make Hogwarts feel entirely our own. Around here, it was simply known as the "Pink Potter Party."

Every detail was chosen with intention, creating an experience that unfolded like a story—from the invitation that arrived at each guest's door to the feast, magical treats, and the final sip of Butterbeer.

Rather than simply sharing a gallery of photos, I wanted to tell the story the same way our guests experienced it. I've broken it into sixteen chapters, each one revealing another piece of the magic.

So grab your wand and come along, it’s going to be a journey. This is the story of how our backyard transformed into a little corner of the Wizarding World.

Chapter One: The Invitation

Every witch and wizard knows their adventure begins with a letter.

I wanted the invitation to feel like the first chapter of the story—not just another piece of mail. Each guest received a hand-delivered invitation complete with their own miniature wand and an enchanting spell. Before they could discover the party details, they first had to cast the spell, bringing a little Hogwarts magic right to their doorstep.

The Spell

An invitation lies before you,
Something magical awaits within.
This wand will surely help you,
Shall you choose to begin.
Before you open, you must first cast a spell.
Point your wand and say, "Aparecium,"
Then see what this message has to tell.

Chapter Two: Hogwarts Awaits

The invitations may have introduced the story, but the entrance was where the magic truly began.

From the moment our guests arrived, I wanted them to feel as though they had wandered into Hogwarts. A stack of weathered suitcases hinted at the journey ahead, Hedwig stood watch nearby, the Sorting Hat waited patiently for its next witch or wizard, and an old broom leaned against the entryway as if someone had just flown in. Every detail was chosen to spark curiosity and invite guests to slow down, look a little closer, and discover something magical.

And reflected in the mirror was a simple reminder:

Magical things are about to happen.

Chapter Three: A Sweet Stop at Honeydukes

No trip to Hogwarts is complete without a visit to Honeydukes.
One of my favorite pieces from the entire celebration was this vintage cabinet that I thrifted and painted in the perfect Honeydukes-inspired shade. Surrounded by blush and fuchsia balloons, it became a whimsical little sweet shop filled with magical treats and striped candy bags just waiting to be filled.
I loved watching guests peek through the glass doors to discover all the tiny details—from Chocolate Frogs and Fizzing Whizzbees to Sherbet Lemons and Sugar Quills. It felt like stepping into Honeydukes without ever leaving the backyard.
Design Tip: Don't be afraid to look beyond traditional party décor. A thrifted furniture piece can become the statement element that ties an entire theme together.

Chapter Four: Divination

Between the bustle of Honeydukes and the excitement of exploring Hogwarts, guests happened upon one of my favorite little corners of the celebration—a quiet nod to Professor Trelawney's classroom.
Vintage teacups were stacked high for tea leaf readings, crystal balls promised glimpses into the future, and every tiny detail invited guests to pause for a moment before continuing their journey through Hogwarts.
Sometimes the smallest corners become the most magical.
It may not have been part of the party itinerary, but it became one of my favorite places to escape into the story.

Chapter Five: Eeylops Owl Emporium

Every young witch and wizard needs a loyal companion, so a visit to Eeylops Owl Emporium was a must.

From the velvet Eeylops banner to the weathered birdcages, moss-covered shelves, feather-filled parcels, and wide-eyed snowy owls, every detail transformed a vintage cabinet into a tiny shop that felt as though it had been tucked inside Diagon Alley for years.

Before heading home, each guest was invited to adopt an owl of their own for the journey ahead. Watching each child carefully choose their feathered companion was one of the sweetest moments of the day—and the perfect ending to a magical adventure.

Chapter Six: Potions Class

No first year at Hogwarts would make it very far without mastering the art of potion making.

Our Potions classroom was filled with bubbling cauldrons, weathered potion bottles, vintage books, and shelves of magical ingredients, creating an apothecary worthy of Professor Snape himself. Every little detail invited guests to slow down and explore.

Later in the celebration, the young witches and wizards returned for Potions Class. Each student gathered ingredients, followed their First Year Class Notes, and brewed their own magical potion. It was one of those activities that had everyone completely immersed in the magic.

Chapter Seven: Owl Post

No stroll through the wizarding world would be complete without a stop at the Owl Post.

Tucked beneath the fluttering banners, shelves overflowed with parcels wrapped in kraft paper, velvet ribbons, wax seals, feathers, handwritten letters, and magical deliveries waiting to be sent across the wizarding world. A snowy owl stood watch from its gilded cage, ready to carry the next special message.

While it wasn't an interactive station, it added another layer of storytelling and helped the entire celebration feel like a bustling corner of Diagon Alley.

Chapter Eight: Platform 9¾

You can't catch the Hogwarts Express without passing through Platform 9¾.

Sometimes the most magical displays invite you to look a little closer. Resting atop a vintage gold bar cart, this whimsical cake became the heart of the dessert display, while a handful of carefully chosen treasures added layers of magic for guests to discover along the way.

Styling Tip: Start with one beautiful focal point, then build around it with thoughtful layers. It's the little details—an old letter, a pair of glasses, a Golden Snitch tucked into the corner—that invite guests to pause and discover the magic.

Chapter Nine: The Three Broomsticks

No visit to Hogsmeade is complete without a stop at The Three Broomsticks.

Tucked beneath the trees, a little tavern awaited weary wizards. Frosted mugs stood ready beside chilled Butterbeer, bottles of Gilly Water caught the afternoon light, and a bubbling pumpkin juice cauldron welcomed guests with every pour. It was a quiet corner to gather, raise a glass, and linger for just a moment before wandering off in search of the next bit of magic.

Chapter Ten: The Mantel of Magic

This little corner was filled with stories. Acceptance letters spilled from the mantel as if they'd come fluttering down the chimney overnight. Well-loved books waited to be opened, candles reached toward the sky, Harry's glasses and wand rested nearby waiting for their next adventure, and a collection of handcrafted pink brooms leaned against the fireplace, ready for the next flight across the castle grounds.

The fireplace itself was handcrafted by my husband, creating the perfect stage for every magical detail to come to life. It became the kind of piece that drew guests in from across the yard, only to reward them with something new every time they looked a little closer.

Chapter Eleven: The Great Hall

Every witch and wizard had a place waiting for them in the Great Hall.

Each place setting welcomed its guest with a custom blush velvet charger, vintage glassware, and thoughtful touches that made every child feel like they truly belonged at Hogwarts.

The center of the table told its own story. Moss wound its way between Hogwarts acceptance letters, vintage keys, scattered feathers, Harry's glasses, his wand, and a waiting ticket for the Hogwarts Express—as if someone had just stepped away moments before.

Above it all, Hedwig soared with acceptance letters in tow, ready to deliver one final invitation.

Photography Tip: Don't wait until every last detail is in place before picking up your camera. Photograph your tablescape as you build it, capturing each new layer along the way. You'll not only preserve all the thoughtful details, but you'll also have more variety to tell the complete story.

Chapter 12: The Whomping Willow

Of all the DIY projects we tackled for this party, the flying Ford Anglia was my favorite. Suspended from an ivy-covered backyard tree, the handmade cardboard car transformed an everyday corner of our yard into a scene inspired by the Whomping Willow. Complete with a caution sign below, it quickly became one of the most photographed spots of the day.

Chapter 13: Madam Malkins & Ollivanders

Beneath the branches, young witches and wizards found everything they needed for the adventure ahead. Black Hogwarts robes hung neatly at Madam Malkin's, waiting to outfit each new student. It was a simple little moment, but watching everyone slip into their robes made it feel as though Hogwarts had come to life.

Next came a visit to Ollivander's. Before choosing a wand, each student completed their own wand permit—a playful detail that made the experience feel wonderfully official. We handcrafted every wand especially for the celebration, displaying them inside a moss-lined glass case until each one found its perfect match. By the time they wandered on, robes draped over their shoulders and wands in hand, every child looked ready for their first year at Hogwarts.

Chapter 14: Herbology Class

A botanical backdrop transformed an ordinary corner of the backyard into Herbology class, where plenty of young Mandrakes were waiting to be repotted.

Each student repotted their very own immature Mandrake, complete with a caution label warning that ear protection was strongly advised.

Chapter 15: Quidditch

Racing brooms, handcrafted with natural broomcorn and soft blush bristles, leaned beside an old trunk filled with Quidditch treasures. Nearby, the Golden Snitch rested safely beneath glass while the Quaffle and Bludgers waited for the next match at Hogwarts.

Chapter 16: A Taste of Hogwarts

No visit to Hogwarts is complete without a little something to eat—or drink. From frothy Butterbeer and chilled Gillywater to Liquid Luck, and wizard wand breadsticks, every bite and sip helped bring the wizarding world to life. We kept the menu simple enough for a backyard celebration while adding magical touches that made each stop at the table feel like part of the adventure.

Epilogue: Mischief Managed

Every story deserves a memorable ending, and this one is no exception.
Looking back, this remains one of my favorite celebrations I've ever created. Not just because of the floating candles, Butterbeer, or all the magical details, but because we dreamed them up together. From handmaking decorations to planning each little surprise, this party became a family project. By the end we weren't just hosting a Harry Potter party—we had completely stepped into the Wizarding World ourselves.
Watching our friends grab their wands, embrace their characters and become part of the story truly made this day unforgettable.
